Alice’s Wedding are a five-piece band from Uddevala, Sweden, who describe themselves as “sad boys making sad music in a sad town”. Earlier this month, they released their debut EP, Welcome to the Wedding, which sees the genres of shoegaze and emo collide in a firework of emphatic sensitivity.
Many shoegaze bands deliver their vocals with a soft whisper or gentle coo, as if the singer is peeking from over top of the wall of sound created by the instruments. Alice’s Wedding are an exception to this norm. At the beginning of “Alice Song”, their vocalist sounds like a dead ringer for Jim Adkins of Jimmy Eat World. On “Cut Me Into Three”, the most moshpit-ready song on here, the explosive chorus is boistered by rough gutteral growls that add another dimension of energetic raw expression.
With the impassioned vocals tied in with battering drums and guitars both violent and volant, Welcome to The Wedding is a strong display of anthem within atmosphere and positions the band as one of the brightest new faces of the emo-gaze sound.
