Listening to a new artist for the first time can be a really exciting experience. I found about Goodwill, Good Will when one of their members responded to a Reddit post asking for music recommendations. They describe the band’s sound as emogaze and, like I am with any mention or portmanteau of shoegaze, I was immediately intrigued. In their response, they linked the band’s latest single “Always, Often”. Interestingly enough, “Always, Often” is how frequently I’ve been listening to this track because it is fantastic.
“Always, Often” most definitely exemplifies its emogaze tag. We get the pointed perspective of loneliness intertwined with breakdowns that build up impenetrable walls of guitar. Through the bridge and into the coda, a repeating refrain questioning isolation is beat into one’s head with the noise, left to stick and demand another play.
