New Really Good Album: Deserta – Black Aura My Sun

Friday is my favourite day of the week. With all the new music that comes, there is so much to dig into. One can listen to the releases they’ve been eagerly anticipating from their favourite artists, or they might hear something amazing from someone new to them. For me, this past week’s pleasant surprise from an unfamiliar face was Deserta’s Black Aura My Sun.

I knew nothing of Matt Doty’s but was intrigued by the album’s title. Wanting a sample, I put on the fourth track, “Hide”, and was thrown headfirst to a shoegazey state of euphoria when the distorted drone-like riffs kicked in. It’s an early candidate for my favourite song of the year..

Black Aura My Sun conjures up feelings of flying above a city lit up by the night sky. It’s vast and cinematic, yet tender and intimate, and going to be on repeat for a while over at HotK headquarters.
