My favourite Swedish boys are back with a new song and it’s “got twooo versions”. “The Absence of Birds” and “The Absence of Birds (Untitled Version 2 by Civilistjävel!) are now streaming on their Bandcamp page.
“The Absence of Birds” was previewed in an Instagram post by the band back in December. It’s a departure away from the synth pop stylings of their last full-length album, 2016’s Running Out of Love ,back towards the lush warmth of their earlier dream pop works, albeit a little less gritty. Nonetheless, it maintains their trademark intimate sound and is yet another superb song in their catalog.
(Untitled Version 2) is a cover by Civilistjavel!. Any remnants of the original track are obsured in Version 2’s expansive and enveloping atmosphere. As far as moody and textural ambient goes, this is excellent stuff. I knew nothing about Civilistjavel! before this release but I will definitely be checking out more of their material.
One thing interesting thing to note is the February 7th release date. Could it be “The Absence of Birds” is the lead single and title track to an album being released this Friday? We can only hope so, but even if that’s not the case, the band says we can expect much more music from them this year. Hell yeah.
